Scientific and Research Centre on Space Hydrometeorolgy "PLANETA" (SRC "PLANETA") -
Russian state organisation established since 1974.
SRC "Planeta" is a leading organization in exploiting and development of national
satellite Earth observation systems for hydrometeorological, oceanographic, heliogeophysical
and environmental purpose and also in receiving and processing data from foreign
satellites. SRC "Planeta" works in cooperation with national hydrometeorological
services and space agencies of more than 30 countries: USA, European Union, Japan,
India, China, South Korea and others.
SRC "Planeta" is executing operative control and guidance management of ground
system for receiving and processing satellite data that includes three regional
centers: European Center (SRC "Planeta", Moscow, with branch offices in Obninsk
and Dolgoprudny), Siberian Center (regional department in Novosibirsk) & Far-Eastern
Center (regional department in Khabarovsk). Ground system also includes a network
of almost 70 stationary and mobile autonomous receiving stations located in Russia,
Antarctica, or mounted on ships. Together they provide satellite data coverage
for all the territory of Russian Federation and Europe.
SRC "Planeta" ground system is one of the largest in the world and the largest
in Russian Federation. It receives and processes vast amounts of data (more than
280 Gigabytes per day) from 16 national and foreign Earth observation satellites,
issues more than 120 types of satellite information products, maintains a satellite
data archive (that has a status of a Federal Data Fund) and supports more than
460 federal, regional and local level users. The system is the largest in the world
in terms of territorial coverage (1/5 of the Earth's surface).
In Russia this system is unique and is used as a base federal system for supporting
federal government with satellite information. It is also used for supporting Russia’s
obligations in international satellite data exchange. SRC "Planeta" acts as an
operator of on-board hydrometeorological and oceanographical equipment that is
mounted on national Earth observation satellites. At present, Russian orbital constellation
consists of four meteorological and environmental satellites: geostationary satellite "Elektro-L"N1
and three polar-orbiting satellites - "Meteor-M"N1, "Kanopus-V" and "Resurs-P".
SRC "Planeta" is participating on regular basis in major national and international
programs concerned with use of Earth remote sensing data: operative hydrometeorology,
ecology, global climate research and monitoring, disaster monitoring etc. Center
possesses vast experience in realization of various applied projects (including
international projects in collaboration with leading world organizations) and in
building of territorial and specialized informational systems that use satellite
data.
